What is direct sourcing in a contingent workforce?

Direct sourcing in a contingent workforce is a strategy in which an organisation builds, curates, and engages its own pool of temporary, contract, and freelance talent, using its employer brand rather than relying entirely on external staffing agencies to find workers.

Source Group International (SGI) views direct sourcing as one component of a broader workforce strategy. Organisations can prioritise known, engaged and pre-qualified talent while continuing to use specialist recruitment partners for roles, markets or skills that cannot be filled effectively through the direct talent pool.

A direct sourcing talent pool can include previous contractors, former employees, employee referrals, freelancers, previous applicants, silver-medallist candidates and external specialists who have opted into the organisation's talent community.

Direct sourcing does not aim to remove recruitment suppliers. It creates another reliable route to talent and gives organisations greater control over candidate relationships, employer branding and repeat hiring.
