When we look at the job market, there are 3.5 million cybersecurity job vacancies worldwide. With nearly&nbsp;<a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.cobalt.io/blog/cybersecurity-statistics-2024#:~:text=According%20to%20Security%20Magazine%2C%20there,1%20cyberattack%20every%2039%20seconds." target="_blank" rel="noopener">one cyberattack every 39 seconds</a>, ensuring we have the skills necessary to protect from ransomware and malignant attacks is more important than ever. But there's still a way to go before we're in that position.&nbsp; 
<h2>The Rise of Cybersecurity</h2>
The internet is part of our daily lives. The&nbsp;<a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/1380282/daily-time-spent-online-global/#:~:text=As%20of%20the%20third%20quarter,has%20increased%20by%2016%20minutes." target="_blank" rel="noopener">average adult spends six hours and 40 minutes online</a>&nbsp;every single day. From scrolling social feeds to online banking to shopping to emailing, every activity we do online involves sharing sensitive information. For businesses, that means they need to be able to store and exchange information securely or risk considerable fines. It's not just fear of penalty that forces firms to take action; it's now the norm for a company's intangible assets, such as its data, to be worth more than its tangible assets. Intangible assets make up roughly&nbsp;<a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.stationx.net/cyber-security-skills-gap/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">90% of the assets of all S&amp;P 500 listed companies</a>, making Cybersecurity a powerful way to protect a company's value.&nbsp; &nbsp;
Securing data isn't a static job, though. It's ever-changing, ever-evolving, and ever more challenging. The risk of a cyber attack is&nbsp;<a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://cybersecurityventures.com/cybercrime-to-cost-the-world-8-trillion-annually-in-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">likely to grow by 15% per year</a>&nbsp;over the next three years. The UK Home Office has classified cybercrime as a tier-one risk. Cyber attacks are becoming more frequent and more challenging to detect, which means the skills needed to protect our data and systems are more critical than ever.

<h2>The cyber skills gap across Europe</h2>
The need for cybersecurity professionals is on the rise, highlighting the gap in the job market. Demand far outstrips the number of cybersecurity professionals in Europe, and unless that shortage is addressed, the issue will only get worse. In Europe,&nbsp;<a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.stationx.net/cyber-security-skills-gap/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the gap currently stands at 300,000</a>. The EMEA region has shown the&nbsp;<a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.euractiv.com/section/cybersecurity/news/cyber-skills-gap-keeps-widening-report-warns/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">most significant increase in the cyber talent gap</a>, threatening technological advancement.
The executive director of the EU Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) said, "To implement all the current and upcoming EU legal requirements for cyber security, we need more people with certain skills. Without this human capital, we cannot achieve our goal of a high level of Cybersecurity across the EU."
The sector has reached an impasse. With the fast-paced development and innovation, the industry is powering ahead, but innovation will stall without the human resources and specialists to secure those developments. ENISA have reported that without investment in re-skilling and upskilling the workforce gap can't be reduced.
There are two parts to the shortage we need to look at. The first is straight-up skills. &nbsp;
<h2>1. Creating a skilled Cybersecurity workforce</h2>
The Cybersecurity Higher Education Database reports that&nbsp;<a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.enisa.europa.eu/news/cybersecurity-skills-conference-strengthening-human-capital-in-the-eu" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the number of cybersecurity graduates has grown 25% over the last two years</a>, but with the current shortfall, the industry could use more. Instead, further investment is the catalyst for re-skilling and upskilling.&nbsp;
<a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://cybersecurityventures.com/jobs/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The European Commission declared 2023 the Year of Skills</a> to recognize the need to upskill. As part of the year, ambitious targets were set, such as establishing a workforce of 20 million ICT specialists across Europe. If they were successful in meeting this target, it would go a long way toward filling the cybersecurity skills gap.
It's clear that the European Commission understands the potential pitfalls of a widening cybersecurity skills gap, with&nbsp;<a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/speech_23_2355" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice President,&nbsp;</a>stating, "Cybersecurity is a must-have. To protect our societies, to protect us as citizens, and to protect our economy."
The skills shortage is an issue that extends far beyond our computer screens.&nbsp; 
<h2>2. Addressing the gender imbalance in Cybersecurity</h2>
The second area is gender diversity within Cybersecurity. Women make up only&nbsp;<a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.csp.partners/2023/03/08/heres-how-companies-in-2023-are-closing-the-gender-gap-in-cyber-security/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a quarter of ICT specialists</a>. Without addressing this imbalance, it will prove difficult to reach the number of cybersecurity specialists needed to meet demand and secure the industry's future.&nbsp;
While this number is growing, it's not fast-paced enough to address the fundamental imbalance or help with the skills gap. If we want to increase the number of skilled experts in the industry, the answer could be to become a more inclusive industry that attracts more women.&nbsp;
Offering mentoring programs, investing in initiatives such as female-only coding camps, networking groups like "<a href="https://www.meetup.com/source-talks-superwomen-in-tech/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SuperWomen in Tech</a>" and considering supporting women returning from maternity leave can make the industry more attractive to female employees.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
<h2>Cybersecurity as the foundation for innovation</h2>
Just as Cybersecurity isn't one-time and done, training a cybersecurity professional isn't one-time. Instead, with technologies evolving, cybersecurity experts need to continually upskill in order to stay relevant.&nbsp;
That requires resources, effort, and, most of all, time. Upskilling isn't a quick task, which is why it's so critical to address Europe's cybersecurity skills gap now rather than wait. There are courses out there that offer certifications in a matter of months, but&nbsp;<a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.esg-global.com/research/esg-research-report-the-life-and-times-of-cybersecurity-professionals-2020" target="_blank" rel="noopener">previous research</a>&nbsp;found that many in the cybersecurity industry estimated it takes between 3 and 5 years to develop fundamental proficiency.&nbsp; 
<h2>Plugging the gap</h2>
There are examples of successful cybersecurity recruitment initiatives at the EU, national, and company levels.&nbsp;
As already mentioned, the European Commission's Year of Skills scheme is tackling skills gaps across the region as a whole, highlighting the issue and providing training to upskill in Cybersecurity.&nbsp;
In April 2023, the European Commission adopted the&nbsp;<a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.enisa.europa.eu/topics/education/european-cybersecurity-skills-framework" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Communication on a Cybersecurity Skills&nbsp;</a>Academy, an initiative that brings together existing schemes to improve their efficiency and coordination. This joined-up approach aims to bridge the cybersecurity skills gap and boost growth within the EU.
The German Economic Institute has identified its cyber talent gap that could reach 106,000 people by 2026. To address this, Germany has launched two initiatives,&nbsp;MINT-Nachwus&nbsp;and&nbsp;Make it in Germany. The first scheme targets young people to encourage them to take up a career in a STEM subject. While this won't address the gap in the next five years, it's protecting the industry's future.&nbsp;Make it in Germany highlights the opportunities in Germany and the IT sector, encouraging expats to move to the country and help address their skills gap.
Cisco revealed a goal to&nbsp;<a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://news-blogs.cisco.com/emea/2023/03/02/cisco-to-train-250000-people-with-cybersecurity-skills-in-europe/?team=global_communications&amp;medium=content_syndication&amp;campaign=campaign_independent&amp;ccid=cc003711&amp;dtid=pcsotr000444" target="_blank" rel="noopener">train 250,000 people in Cybersecurity</a> across the EU by mid-2025. This training program is part of their ambition to upskill 2.6 million people across Europe. This initiative is already running in the Netherlands and Italy and will be launched in subsequent countries later this year.&nbsp;
IBM is also an example of a successful cybersecurity skills training program. They're committed to building a more equitable society by helping provide education and training to those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

<h2>Looking to a world built on Cybersecurity</h2>

Within the EU, the skills gap is widening, and there is a severe lack of skilled workers. But change is afoot. The EU, countries, and organizations are starting to take steps to address the challenges faced by the cybersecurity industry and investing in the training and resources necessary to upskill a new generation of experts.&nbsp;
With more funding via the DIGITAL Europe Programme, more work programs are on the horizon to bridge the skills gap.&nbsp;
The cybersecurity skills gap isn't something that can be changed overnight. It's not something that can be changed in a year. But by taking action now, we can prevent it from widening further and begin to fill some of the 3.5 million cybersecurity jobs worldwide that currently stand vacant.

The EU resilience act that's shifting the cyber security market

<h3>Introduction</h3>
On Thursday 30th November, Managing Director of Scale Search, Cian Loughnane, and Head of Marketing at SGI, Rebecca Lauder-Fletcher, paid an exciting visit to Morgan Stanley.&nbsp;
SGI&rsquo;s invitation was extended as part of an inspiring initiative organized by Caroline McLoughlin, the leader behind Net Eire, Co-operation Ireland, and their Student Diversity Program.
<h3> Event Overview</h3>
The event aims to open doors for students from Northern Ireland and London, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds in order to build excitement for their futures. Growing up in Dublin himself, Cian, now one of the top executive recruiters in the business, saw this as the perfect chance to share his journey and wisdom with the next generation of bright and ambitious minds. Instilling the idea that a career at an institution like Morgan Stanley is well within their reach. The intention behind this inspired event is to give actionable advice through a workshop put together by Rebecca and Cian running interview scenarios and offering guidance on how to stand out and make a lasting impression.
<h3> Interview Masterclass</h3>
The budding students of the Net Eire, Co-operation Ireland program were given scenarios such as applying and discussing open positions at Morgan Stanley. This &ldquo;interview masterclass&rdquo; was tailored for students who want to step into the business world and leave the workshop feeling inspired, educated, and ambitious enough to work towards a prosperous career.

<h3> What the Students Took Away from It:</h3>
After a tour of the trading floor, students were asked why a candidate gets hired. Interestingly, their answers mirrored closely to what most executives Cian coaches. Showcase your experience and draw connections as to how that aligns with the position you&rsquo;re applying for. From here a mock interview was staged between Cian, Rebecca and the students where they learned to demonstrate career achievements, align themselves with the desired company's values, and present themselves effectively.
<h3> Why SGI and Scale Search Are Dedicated to These Projects:</h3>
In the UK, 15 million people live in poverty, including 4.2 million children. It is imperative that there are programs out there that let children and young people from less fortunate backgrounds know that with the right guidance, dedication and consistency, that these jobs are well within their reach.&nbsp;
Cian emphasizes the societal duty to help the less fortunate realize their potential, citing a study that shows females from lower economic backgrounds take 21% longer to progress to senior roles. At SGI we want that to change and the driving purpose behind Co-operation Ireland is to push economic benefits and diversity within these legacy institutions. So it couldn&rsquo;t have been a better match and cause for us to get involved in.

The Cyber Security market is the place to be right now. Demand for Cyber Security professionals is through the roof and supply can&rsquo;t keep up. It's predicted that in <a href="https://cybersecurityventures.com/jobs/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2023 there&rsquo;ll be a shortage of 3.5 million Cyber Security professionals</a>. But what&rsquo;s driving demand? How can the market keep up? What&rsquo;s the future of Cyber Security?
With so much shifting within the industry, new developments, new technologies and new challenges, it&rsquo;s tricky to see what comes next.
First, we need to understand what&rsquo;s driving demand for Cyber Security professionals.
<h2>Why is the level of demand so high?</h2>
Over the last few years we&rsquo;ve seen the number of cyber attacks significantly increase. Businesses have suffered reputational damage, financial losses and legal ramifications. Those consequences have resulted in companies stepping up their commitment to understanding and mitigating cyber security attacks. But to do that, they need Cyber Security experts.
<h3>Rise of AI and machine learning</h3>
When we think of hackers, we think of one individual squirrelled away in a room on their laptop until the small hours of the morning. But that&rsquo;s not the reality. Cyber Hacking today is a multi-billion dollar enterprise, and one that&rsquo;s utilising all new technologies to find smarter and more effective ways to navigate security.
Using Artificial Intelligence and machine learning hackers can increase their end-to-end-attack life from hours to days or even weeks. With machine learning in the mix, the software can learn what&rsquo;s working and what&rsquo;s not and continually adapt, increasing the threat and likelihood of a security breach.
<h3>Cloud technology</h3>
The shift to remote working combined with an increase in the level of personal data collected and stored by businesses means Cloud technology has never been more important. To give an idea of scale, <a href="https://quantium.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/BFM_Quantium.pdf">in 2020 every person on Earth created 1.7MB of data every second</a>. With that much personal information held remotely there&rsquo;s a real security risk.
By hosting cloud technology with third parties, access is granted to a range of people and organisations creating more entry ways for hackers to exploit.
<h3>Ransomware attacks</h3>
In the most extreme <a href="https://www.ibm.com/downloads/cas/EV6NAQR4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ransomware attacks hackers have demanded $40-80 million payments</a> from their victims, making ransomware attacks a serious threat. Through increased use of remote desktop access hackers have been able to access sensitive data to leverage.
With new, sophisticated technology and tactics such as social engineering, digital extortion and distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) the use and severity of ransomware attacks is on the rise and something businesses need to plan for. 
<h2>Impact of Cyber Security breaches</h2>
<a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/cyber-security-breaches-survey-2023/cyber-security-breaches-survey-2023" target="_blank" rel="noopener">20% of organisations in the UK</a> have reported experiencing a data breach accident once per month. With that many businesses impacted it&rsquo;s clear that Cyber Security has to be on the agenda of any forward-thinking company.
The cost of cyber security breachers <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/cyber-security-breaches-survey-2023/cyber-security-breaches-survey-2023" target="_blank" rel="noopener">averages annually at around &pound;15,300 per victim</a>. That&rsquo;s a significant contribution towards the salary of an expert employee who can prevent those attacks from happening.

<h2>Future for Cyber Security</h2>
What&rsquo;s clear is that this is an industry set to grow. By the end of this year it&rsquo;s estimated the <a href="https://hrforecast.com/global-labor-market-insights-june-2023-edition/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cyber Security industry will be worth over $202 billion</a>. Unsurprisingly that growth has translated into demand for experts, and over the last two years <a href="https://hrforecast.com/global-labor-market-insights-june-2023-edition/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">demand for Cyber Security professionals has grown by 60%</a>.&nbsp; 
But when we talk about demand for Cyber Security professionals, we aren&rsquo;t just talking about traditional IT roles. Non-IT roles such as project managers, business analyst, business development managers and customer experience employees are also seeing cyber security knowledge filter into their job descriptions. Showing how Cyber Security is becoming everyone&rsquo;s responsibility and over the next few years we&rsquo;ll see more roles taking responsibility for digital security in one way or another.
For businesses the increase in demand combined with the shortfall in Cyber Security professionals means the job market is going to become even more competitive. Requiring organisations to think about the overall compensation strategies but also ensuring they retain the skilled experts they already have.

Which means it&rsquo;s an issue that needs proactively managing so you have the expertise in place before you need them.

Whether you&rsquo;re looking for that elusive first job or shifting your career focus, landing your dream role in recruitment can feel a bit tricky. When you peel back the mystery it&rsquo;s relatively straightforward, as long as you&rsquo;re willing to go the extra mile and commit yourself to the process.&nbsp;

1. Understand yourself&nbsp;
Recruitment is a fast-paced, exciting career path and you need to make sure that you&rsquo;re going to thrive in that environment. If you&rsquo;re thinking about starting your dream career in recruitment it&rsquo;s worth taking some time to think about your skills, weaknesses, ambitions and priorities to make sure that you&rsquo;re applying to the right roles.&nbsp;

2. Do your research&nbsp;
Do you want to work in-house or for an agency? Both are recruitment but they have their own quirks and benefits. Making the right decision for you will be the foundation of your career. Talk to others in those positions and do your research, identifying which route is best for you and who those employers are.&nbsp;

3. Build your personal brand&nbsp;
What is a personal brand? It&rsquo;s all the information you put out into the world and how you put it out there. Making sure your CV is high-quality, your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date, your social media platforms are either locked down or the content is suitable for a potential employer to view. It&rsquo;s also worth doing a google of your name and seeing what comes up.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
4. Target your dream employer&nbsp;
With your research completed, you can start to keep an eye on opportunities at your dream employer. If they don&rsquo;t have any advertised vacancies then it&rsquo;s always worth contacting the hiring manager directly for an informal chat to make yourself and your ambitions known.&nbsp;

5. Look for opportunities&nbsp;
Job boards, LinkedIn, word of mouth, company websites. Your job is to become the Sherlock Holmes of the recruitment world - sniffing out your opportunity. Don&rsquo;t wait for it to come to you, be proactive and if you still can&rsquo;t find anything online, pick up the phone and start calling agencies and businesses to create an opportunity.&nbsp;

6. Network&nbsp;
If you aren&rsquo;t getting anywhere through traditional methods then it&rsquo;s time to start building a network. Do you know anyone who works in the sector or companies you want to work? Do any of your friends know anyone? Are you connected on LinkedIn? Put yourself out there and start building your network.&nbsp;

7. Planning and preparation&nbsp;
An interview isn&rsquo;t the time to wing it. Take your time and prepare yourself. Think about the type of questions you might be asked and your answers. Research the company and think about what you want to find out about them. You want to build a rapport with them and this is your opportunity to get under the skin and find out if it&rsquo;s the right place to kick start your career in recruitment.&nbsp;&nbsp;

8. Smash that interview&nbsp;
Take a deep breath, lay off the caffeine, arrive 5 minutes early, have your questions ready and be your best self. Use all your research, practice and passion to show them why you would be amazing at the role.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Even if your dream employer offers you a position, take a moment to think about it properly. Is the package what you were expecting, what promotion opportunities are there, does the start date work for you? You need to think long-term when making this decision, so don&rsquo;t rush into it.&nbsp;

Why choose a career in recruitment? Working in recruitment is a rewarding experience for many people. If you’re an outgoing person with a passion for helping others, you might be thinking about a career in recruitment and a career at SGI. Here are some reasons why working in recruitment is a great career option. Freedom to manage priorities Once you are trained, you’ll start to build your own base of clients and candidates. Most recruitment desks are remunerated mostly by the commission on placements. So, you’ll be motivated to work hard and follow approaches that yield the bestresults. Uncapped earning and progression Most recruitment firms offer commission with no ceiling. This means that the only limit to how much money you can make is your own dedication. It’s not uncommon for a Junior Recruitment Consultant to earn a promotion within the first 6-12 months. Helping others achieve Where you work is a big part of your identity. And that’s true for your candidates as well. Plus, when you find great candidates for your clients, they’ll reward you with loyalty and repeat business. This article has come at a unique time in the SGI calendar. Last week, we celebrated the end of H1. We&rsquo;ve seen fantastic levels of growth within the business and expanding opportunities for our employees. It really is an exciting time to be part of the team!

Whilst we have seen incredible growth this year, our staff remain the most important element at SGI. As Lawrence puts it, &ldquo;There are many measurements of success: financial, customer, staff performance &amp; well-being, community, impact metrics and company goals, to name but a few. But really, we can only measure ourselves in achieving what we set out to do for our staff, as without them nothing happens.&rdquo;

Meet The Founders of SGI

The SGI Rainforest has reached 1000 Trees!
&nbsp;
In January 2022, SGI partnered with environmental organisation <a href="https://ecologi.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Ecologi</a>. We aim to fund the planting of hundreds of trees throughout the course of this year, every placement we make at SGI, we plant a tree. We'd just like to say thank you for our progress so far, we've planted 1000 trees with the support of our customers.
&nbsp;
It's a brilliant start and we're not even halfway through the year yet! Our CSR promise is about working with communities, for the communities and seeing measurable change, and this initiative does just that. It's an impactful climate change project, which sees our funding support a range of projects to reduce the greenhouse effect.&nbsp;

Team SGI are over the moon to announce that we’ve been shortlisted in this year’s Recruiter Awards. The Recruiter Awards recognizes the best in Recruitment Agencies, looking at growth, retention, staff development and overall achievement. It’s been an incredible year for team SGI already, reaching 100+ headcount, a 20% increase in our staff numbers, 3 office moves for our global teams, and continued success across our customer network.
